Everybody would like to be independent and not receive orders from their superiors anymore. How many can actually develop enough discipline to become the one who gives the orders? And to whom? Well, if you work alone as a self-employed person, you usually give orders to yourself. It may sound contradictory, but you still need to receive orders in order to accomplish tasks. What changes is that there is a higher level of tolerance if you receive orders from yourself rather than from a third person. In both scenarios, the business should prosper and grow, or at least survive. The substantial difference is how determined we are to fulfil all the tasks on our own, without external help.
Commanding and giving orders may seem scenic and rewarding, but they require a lot of training and discipline. Like a well-trained dog that can fetch the stick on command, being able to withstand the load of work and its flactuation due to external forces requires patience and dedication. Usually, external forces that may modify our work mindset and work tolerance include relationships, physical or mental troubles, financial unbalances, or unexpected events.
That’s why it is important to schedule a standard working-day that retains a certain degree of flexibility. In terms of self-discipline, within a single ideal working-day, it is a good habit to create gradual movement between working-moments and free-moments. It is obvious that one excludes the other. What is less evident is how to alternate the two, especially when the working load varies quite a lot throughout the week. The best feedback is the work itself. If you are doing a good job, keep using a similar method. If the results are not encouraging, change strategy and restart from zero. It is always advisable to start with the basics and refresh them, even for those who have acquired higher levels of skills and knowledge.
Sometimes we are lost and do not understand what or where the mistake is. To start over from scratch pushes you to reset the attempts and simulate that nothing has ever been done before. And when you try things for the first time, there is always that amount of surprise radiating around while performing the task. It is here that you will discover the beauty of your own business, whatever it may be. The real motivation of everything.
